Happy 10th Birthday to the Ballymun Music Room 2019
Located here in St.Josephs the Ballymun Music Room is celebrating 10 years. To mark the anniversary, a screening of the documentary ‘ Ballymun Lullaby’ directed by Frank Berry took place at the Light House Cinema in Dublin. Initiated as part of the Dublin City Council's Ballymun Rengeneration Project, the room is credited with opening up a new world of music for many of our past and present Pupils.
The music room has led to some impressive graduates too, over the past decade, students of the Ballymun Music Programme have visited and performed in impressive and distinguished venues such as Trinity College Dublin, Dublin Castle, The National Convention Centre, Cork City Hall and the National Concert Hall.
The school was thrilled to have a team from RTE to interview our pupils about the music programme. A special segment will be aired on The Today Show on RTE.

In 2008 The Ballymun Music Programme, in association with City Arts/Tower Songs, approached composer Daragh O’ Toole to write an original suite for youth orchestra and choir to be performed by the children from Ballymun. During the writing process Daragh worked with two local teenagers (Daire Ni Bhreoin and Darren Scully) who contributed to the lyrics of three of the pieces.
This suite was a huge success, culminating in a sold-out performance at the Helix theatre on Feb 3rd 2009. An orchestra and choir of over two hundred children from The Ballymun Music Programme performed on the night, accompanied by RTE Cor Na nÓg, and a number of players from both the RTE Concert and Symphony orchestras. The performance was conducted by David Brophy (the principal conductor of the RTE Concert Orchestra).
It was then performed again for President Mary McAleese and Archbishop Desmond Tutu at the launch of the Ballymun Music Programme’s new Music Room in St. Joseph’s in 2009. With the full support of RTE, Ballymun Lullaby was recorded on the 21st of May 2009 by the RTE National Concert Orchestra, RTE Cor Na Nog, and the choir of The Ballymun Music Programme.
Then in November 2012, The Ballymun Music Programme teamed up with Music Generation Cork for an inter-city music project with special performances in City Hall in Cork on the 17h November and in the National Concert Hall in Dublin on the 26th November. It was a great success!
