What is an Active School Flag?

The Active School Flag was launched by the Department of Education in May 2009 and is organised through Mayo Education Centre. The purpose of the initiative is to recognise schools that strive to achieve a physically active and physically educated school community.

We are trying to achieve the Active School Flag in St Jospeh's SNS this year. In order to achieve the flag, we must:

  1. Adhere to DES Guidelines regarding PE timetable provision for all students.
  2. Teach a broad and balanced PE curriculum.
  3. Inform and invite the whole school community to participate in the ASF process.
  4. Self-evaluate current provision in terms of P.E, Physical Activity and Community Links.
  5. Plan and Implement improvements for each of the aforementioned areas.
  6. Organise an ‘Active School Week’ as part of the annual school calendar.
  7. See the button below for more information regarding the Active School Flag process.

AS AN ACTIVE SCHOOL WE AIM TO:

Provide all pupils with appropriate PE provision and ensure the school PE policy is both comprehensive and up to date.  Make a range of extra-curricular activities available to children catering for the diversity of our pupils.  Promote physical activity during break times as well as introducing new sports into the school PE timetable. Seek assistance from outside agencies such as the local sports partnerships and National bodies. Involve students in the process and liaise with parents and the local community.

Why do we need to keep Active?

You know exercise is good for you, but do you know how good? No matter what age you are, find out how regular physical activity can improve your life.
