School Year 2020-21
Welcome to Mr. Hand's 5th class page

September 2020

We have settled really well back into school. We were delighted to see all of our friends and teachers again.
We love all the PE and Art we have got to do this month. Here are some pictures of our amazing Art.

October 2020

This month, we visited the community garden at Muck and Magic in Ballymun. We had great fun learning about all of the different crops and plants, and we got to smell and taste different plants such as chilli peppers, runner beans and raspberries. Here are some of the pictures of us enjoying it. Thanks to Ms. Cahill for organising this great trip.
We also had our Halloween parade this year. We had some great costumes, including some very inventive homemade costumes. Well done to the winners of best costumes and raffle winners. Thanks to all for taking part.

School Year 2019 - 2020
Welcome to Mr. Hand's 5th class page.

May 25th - June 5th  2020

Here are some more ideas to keep you going for the next two weeks.

Gaeilge: Try to keep going with DuoLingo - continue to progress through the levels and record what you do.

English: Try these comprehensions and answer the questions that come with them.
1.  https://www.k5learning.com/worksheets/reading-comprehension/5th-grade-5-reading-fossil-mystery.pdf
2. https://www.k5learning.com/worksheets/reading-comprehension/5th-grade-5-goose-voyage.pdf
3. https://www.k5learning.com/worksheets/reading-comprehension/5th-grade-5-animations.pdf

Continue with your writing too. This fortnight, I want you to continue with your narrative writing - using this link, write an adventure story https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zx339j6/articles/zgthrwx

Maths: Keep up with your Mental Maths when you can. Try to get a day or half a day of Mental Maths completed each day. You should only have a couple of weeks left in your book.

This fortnight, practise some division. I've linked some worksheets below to do. Some are short, and some are long. The third one is a challenge, but have a go. The answers are at the bottom of the sheets, no peeking until you're finished!

PE: Setanta GAA club are doing an Active Schools Challenge for those of you interested in hurling. There is a booklet and video to follow, I'll post the booklet when I have it, Setanta will also post it on their website and pages. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fq4e9Afg08E

SESE:This fortnight, we are going to have a look at animals, imsects, birds and sea creatures. What I want you to do is to keep a record of all the animals, creatures and birds you see over the next 2 weeks. Draw a table in one of your copies, or even in notes on your phone. and keep a record of everything you see. When you have found an animal, research them and find out 2 new or interesting facts about them. A good place to start would be the park, there are ducks, ducklings, swans, cygnets, waterhens, coots, herons and even foxes in Poppintree Park recently.

This week, the RTE Home School Hub will have 5th/6th class lessons on Drama, Climate Change (Geography), Fan sa Bhaile (Gaeilge), The Renaissance (History) and the Olympics (PE). Some other challenges for you this week are to: try help out with a parent or guardian in cooking a meal. Learn a new recipe or skill. I hope everyone stays safe and well, and hopefully we'll see you all back in September. Slán.

May 5th - 22nd 2020

As you know, the government announced that we won't be back in school til September. I'll try to keep posting work and ideas based on what we would have been doing during class time. Do what you can, but there is no pressure.

Maths: Keep up with your Mental Maths when you can. Try to get a day or half a day of Mental Maths completed each day. Get a parent/guardian to correct them or self correct using a calculator or a device.

This week, try to practise your long multiplication. There is a worksheet here at this link for you to attempt.
https://www.math-drills.com/multiplication2/images/multiplication_long_no_tseparator_0202_001_pin.jpg?v=1472647486
There is a good explanation of how to do long multiplication if you are having trouble. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkUUNo90eSE

You may have heard about the new 5km limit that we are allowed exercise in. Using maps, try to find 10 interesting places that are within a 5km radius from your home.

Gaeilge: If you haven't already, download www.duolingo.com/. Try to complete Level 1 on the first few topics (Basics, Phrases, Food, Animals) this week. Try to say the words/phrases as you go along, and write down a record of what you have done.

English: Keep reading whenever possible. Whether it's books, newspapers or magazines, try to read for at least 15 minutes each day. If anyone has any younger siblings to read to, this story would be a great idea for you to read aloud to them. https://nosycrow.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Coronavirus-A-Book-for-Children.pdf

Continue to try to write every few days, such as diary writing or keeping a record of your days. This month, our writing genre is Narrative Writing. This means writing creatively, such as stories, dramas and fairytales. Focus on the Setting, the Characters, and the Plot. The links below explain these in a bit more detail.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BVOIyUnk6s  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhOBuYQJPEY
Try to come up with your own narrative, it can be fictional or based on real events, and plan, write and edit your very own story.

History: This month, we are focussing on the life of Nelson Mandela. Mandela was a revolutionary South African leader who fought apartheid throughout his life, and then eventually became President of South Africa. I want everyone to try make a factfile or project based on his life. There are some helpful links below.
http://www.thinkexist.com/english/Author/x/Author_3763_1.htm - famous quotes
https://www.ducksters.com/biography/nelson_mandela.php - biography and facts about Mandela
https://www.theschoolrun.com/homework-help/nelson-mandela - facts, timelines and other useful links

Geography: This fortnight, I want you to pick a South American country and design a mini brouchre / factfile about it. In your project, try to include areas such as Sport, Food & Culture, Facts, Geography (is it on the coast, rainforests etc), and Animals. A good place to start is this website here - https://www.ducksters.com/geography/southamerica.php - it will show you all the countries to pick from, then click into your chosen one and start to research.

PE: Joe Wicks is still doing daily PE lessons every morning despite his recent hand injury. These are really good to keep active and fit. Also the weather is getting better, and you can probably explore more places with your parents in your 5km zone. Remember before any exercise to do your warm ups, think of them from our PE lessons - stretch your hamstrings, your calfs, your quad muscles, your arms and then shake it all out.

Art: This is where you can be creative in whatever way you want. You have the choice. Design a portrait, draw or create a comic strip, make some 3d art using boxes and other spare materials in your home, draw something on your path/driveway using chalk, there are endless ideas.

March - April 2020

A quick update: I’m sure you’ve all heard the news we won’t be back in school until at least the 5th of May. Here are some ideas for work & activities over the next couple of weeks, including work we would be currently doing in class:

PE: It’s important during everything going on to get outside, relax and let off some steam. There are lots of games you can play, either on your own or with your siblings/family using gardens. Yoga can be great for relaxing and keeping active, there are lots of videos showing different methods and poses. For those of you who like team sports like football, why not set yourself some individual challenges ; How many keepie-ups can I do? How many times can I handpass a ball of a wall? Etc. Why not come up with your own challenge?

Joe Wicks is also doing PE every day on his YouTube channel for children to follow along with -
https://www.youtube.com/user/thebodycoach1/playlists

English: Keep reading – books, newspapers, magazines, stories online, etc. Keeping a diary is a great idea at the moment, it is something you will look back on in 10 years and think it’s crazy. There is an Isolation workbook below with lots of English writing and Art ideas too. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gasHX74OYHHH4hrrP5Y823FarA_TgnuI/view

Maths: Some of the work we would have been doing in class is based on Word Problems. Try to keep up with your Mental Maths to keep these fresh in your minds. There are also some great puzzles here - https://www.mathsweek.ie/2019/puzzles-for-all/

Gaeilge: Duolingo is a great way to learn some Gaeilge. It is available as an app on most phones and tablets, you just need to set up an account. It is great for learning Gaeilge. https://www.duolingo.com/

History: The Industrial Revolution. Try to make a factfile or project based on the Revolution.
Here are some helpful links.

An animation on how the first steam engine was built - http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/victorians/launch_ani_rocket.shtml

Geography: Europe – Project work, pick one EU country and using the template to help you, make a project based on that country. https://teachables.scholastic.com/content/dam/scholastic/teachables/products/85/9780439323185_001/9780439323185_001.pdf
Test your knowledge of Europe with some of these quizzes. https://www.sporcle.com/games/g/europe?sc=europe

Maps – Some ideas include to map your home, your area, and your city.

Science: Have a read of some of these ideas and then try out some of these home experiments
An interesting video about how the lungs work https://kidshealth.org/en/kids/rsmovie.html
Why the sky is blue, and an experiment to show why http://www.kidsgeo.com/geography-for-kids/0045-why-is-the-sky-blue.php   https://www.nymetroparents.com/article/science-experiment-why-is-the-sky-blue

RTE 2 are showing one hour of school every day, they give you a bit of work to do and teach some new things every day. There's also all the games we play in class such as Hit the Button, Wordshake, Countdown etc.

The main thing over the next few weeks is that everyone keeps well, and everyone stays healthy. Take care.
Mr. Hand

September - December 2019
Welcome back. We've been doing great work since we have been back in school. Here are some of the activities we have been doing.

Science

We have been doing lots of fun experiments in Science since we came back. Here are some examples:

Quicksand: We looked at how quicksand works, and then we created an experiment to make our own quicksand and to see if certain things would get stuck in it when it is dry and when it is wet.

What happens to an egg in acid?: We got two eggs, and we put one in vinegar and one into water. We all predicted what would happen, and a couple of days later we found out. Check out below!

The eye: We learned all about the different parts of the eye, and how our eyes work. It was really interesting. We did experiments to see if we could change the way we seen things.

History

We love to do History projects. So far this year, we have done different projects in groups on Thanksgiving, the History of Halloween, and our latest one 'Life in the 1960s'. We watched the RTE programme 'Reeling in the Years' to see what life, tv, sport and music was like in the 1960s.

Geography

We love learning about new places. Most weeks, we use our computer room time to research a new country. We have made factfiles on lots of different places, including Italy, Greece, the UK and Australia.

Alongside Science, we have also been looking at ways to help care for the environment. Hearing about the bushfires in Australia made us a little sad, so we came up with lots of different ways in how we can help the planet, each other, and future generations.

PE & Sport

We love PE in our class, and we try to do PE twice every week, as well as playing lots of games at break time. We hope to get to do hurling or GAA this year, and lots of our class hope to be on the school football teams. We got a real treat in January when Gerry from Ballymun Kickhams brought in the Sam Maguire trophy to us.

School Activities

We also baked our very own class made cheesecake for the school bake sale. We used lots of different ingredients, and every one helped out with different parts. Some people especially loved crushing the biscuits! Our cake sold out really quickly so it must have been nice!

Our class took part in the Halloween parade this year. We all came up with really original ideas.

In October, we also went to see 'Abominable' on our DFL trip as a treat for coming into school, doing our work, and doing our homework.
